Apple quietly upgrades MacBook Pro processor 2010-10-22
Coming on the heels of Apple’s Back to Mac event during which the company launched its newly redesigned MacBook Air laptop, Apple recently announced an update to its MacBook Pro notebook’s processor.
Apple has added an option for a 2.8-gigahertz Intel Core i7 processor to its 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro models. The 13-inch model will still include Intel’s Core 2 Duo processor.
This is sure to be good news for MacBook users who like to get every last megahertz of processing power from their machines, as it adds an extra boost to notebooks, which previously topped out at 2.66 megahertz.
According to tech blog Macgasm, the split between professional- and consumer-based Apple products has never been more apparent. The new MacBook Air runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a max of 1.4 gigahertz, making it substantially slower than the upgraded MacBook Pros. However, the MacBook Air does feature a solid state storage and can store data twice as fast as conventional computers, Apple claims.
The first MacBook Pro models to ship with the new hardware will also include 4 gigabytes of RAM, a 500-gigabyte hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce GT 330M graphics card.
